Don't touch my Classics! New races poll result

I got the idea of this poll reading about the project to move Lombardia in order to make room to Tour of Beijing and was almost in shock when found out a proposal to move also the Ardennes Classics for almost the same reason: a new race put by the UCI in the pro cycling calendar. HELL NO! I thought: don't touch my Classics!

I have nothing against new races and globalization in cycling. It's cool to see people from China or Japan or India as passionated for cycling as we are. A bit less cool - I agree - for cyclists forced to jump around the world like balls. Not cool at all when a new race gets immediately the pro cycling status and UCI moves an old glorious one to make it room. 

In my opinion new races should grow up step by step, like Tour of California did for example. -  BDW I prefered it in February. - That's why I voted 'Ok but not in the pro cycling calendar'. I see very few readers agree with me (only 5% ). A good 11% of you simply find new races great - I'd like to know how many of them are from Europe. A polemical 35% ask more money and respect for old races and I see their point: UCI Overlord - the true one not the fake - openly said it's about money so... But the most of you think there is nothing wrong with new races, just don't like when UCI moves the old ones. 

That's a very reasonable view. A race isn't only a road - and I don't like when the road changes - but also a season in the year, a sky and wood nuance, a feeling related to the moment. There is a Roubaix time, a Tour de France time, an Ardennes time. July IS the Tour and the Tour is yellow because of the yellow fields of July. YES I know about the yellow pages of the newpaper L'auto who first promoted the race, but in our imaginary the yellow fields are more important, with the heat, the campers, the living bikes made by dancing paesans and bales.

The Giro has been moved long time ago as well as the Vuelta. The actual collocation is good for the Italian race but a little bad for the Spanish tour, too close to the Tour and just after the World Championship. A perfect calendar is probably impossible, new races in different countries are cool. However... there are some holy-days in cycling: don't dare to touch them!

10 years of Amstel Curacao Race

Time to celebrate also for one of the most fashionable race in the - NON UCI - calendar. 10 years aren't 100, ok, but already a considerable time and "the organisation has made a special museum in the Lions Dive & Beach Resort with different sorts of memories of 10 years Amstel Curaçao Race. Amongst others you can find all finish photos, special jerseys and beautiful scrap-books. From Monday onwards the museum will be open daily during office hours." In add "the Belgium television channel Sporza will give a lot of attention to this year's Amstel Curaçao Race. Reporter Renaat Schotte will make special videos for a TV broadcast and for their internet site. During the Amstel Curaçao Race on the 5th of November, Renaat Schotte will also present a live report on Paradise FM." 

Are you ready? Frank Schleck tweeted yesterday: "Getting ready and packing for Amstel Curacao Race.@lionsdive resort get ready we gonna be there very soon.looking forward for a nice holiday." I read sceptical lines about but that remains a firm point in cycling addicted life, with dolphins, Miss Curacao in sexy clothes and a bit of racing, yep. 

More about the Continental Bob and Team Differdange 100 years

According to http://www.lequotidien.lu/les-sports/28602.html the new Continental team created by Radio Shack Nissan Trek with and for Bob Jungels will be directed by Adriano Baffi (ex Leopard). As I said that team could be a good chance for young Luxembourgish racers, like the Continental team of Rabobank or Livestrong for the old Radio Shack. DDW Livestrong is told to go on. Together with Bob Jungels Le Quotidien lists other names linked to the new team: Joël Zangerlé and Pit Schlechter (Yes we like!). Both in the National Team in Mendrisio. 

Anyway Zangerlé has a contract with Team Differdange for 2012 Gabriel Gatti says: no salary but the honour to race in a team that made the hystory of cycling in Luxembourg and - also - this year won the TT National Championship by Christian Poos.

In these days the Team Differdange celebres its 100 years by an exposition in Differdange town, by the Hall Sportif Oberkorn: on the 30.10, 31.10 and 2.11 since 3 pm  to 6 pm. I'd like to go but I'm here in Florence: send a pic if you can :)

In short: 

1. Where: in Spa-Francorchamp, by the hôtel de la Source owned by Flavio Becca

2. Who: 26 racers and Staff.

3. How: Friendly! "Il y avait une bonne ambiance. Tout le monde est très motivé en vue de la prochaine saison, moi y compris.» Didier said.

4. Clothes and shoes: "...on va adapter chaque chaussure à chaque coureur, en mettant plus ou moins de matière à un endroit ou à un autre»
5. Orientering and team building: "Même s'ils n'ont pas fait de vélo, les coureurs ont eu l'occasion de mieux se connaître, en participant à une sorte de jeu d'orientation. Par petit groupe, ils sont allés à Spa avec un GPS et ont dû retrouver des points de passage où se trouvaient des questions auxquelles il fallait répondre : «J'étais avec Linus (Gerdemann), Jakob (Fuglsang) et Tony (Gallopin). À une question sur la hauteur du Mont-Blanc, Tony a répondu tout de suite. Ça a pas mal marché, je crois qu'on a terminé deuxième.»

6. Next meeting: training camp in Calpe, Spain "Après trois jours de rassemblement, chacun est rentré chez lui, hier soir. Le prochain rendez-vous est fixé au mois de décembre, du côté de Calpe, en Espagne, au bord de la mer. Là, on attaquera les choses sérieuses avec le traditionnel camp d'entraînement."

Philippe Gilbert won the Vélo d'Or by Vélo Magazine (L'Equipe monthly magazine)  in front of Cadel Evans  and  Mark Cavendish. You can hardly disagree: 18 victories in 2011,1 Tour stage (Mont des Alouettes), all 3 the Ardennes Classics. «Ma série (Flèche Brabançonne, Amstel Gold Race, Flèche Wallonne, Liège-Bastogne-Liège) était assez phénoménale." he said "Ce que je retiens aussi, c'est la série du 13 avril (Flèche Brabançonne) au 2 juillet (victoire d'étape sur le Tour) où je n'ai pas été battu.» 

Thomas Voeckler got the French Vélo d'Or in front of Pierre Rolland and the ' pistard' Grégory Beaugé. Peter Sagan won the Vélo d'Or Espoirs in front of  Edvald Boasson Hagen, and I'm glad because I voted for him in cyclingnews poll and also because EBH isn't an 'espoir' anymore. 

Balanced awards in my opinion. And an easy decision too I guess. But I keep thinking that sprinters and one day racers take advantage on stage tours racers by the ammount of their victories. Evans 'just' won Tour de France and Tirreno Adriatico: that means he was the best one for many weeks and on different fields. Gilbert deserved it all anyway: his season was more then impressive.

If there was an award for sadness I'd have good chances to win it in spite I am not starving, have got a home, a job - more or less - and a wonderful son. Sadness isn't related to material things too it seems. Or maybe I miss something 'material' not included in the list. Just to tell you. But happyness isn't basic to live. 

Ok... it will be a blue off season.

André Steensen about leaving Saxo Bank

Disappointed of course - according to Ekstrabladet.dk via Velonation - he said:  “I unfortunately have not had my contract renewed with Saxo Bank [...] Bjarne called me and told me that he wanted to try some new riders”. Steensen had a quite good season and just got in Italy his best result: 12th in  Tour of Denmark, 7th in Breckenridge stage of the USA Pro Cycling Challenge,  11th overall in the Circuit Franco Belge 8th in Gran Piemonte. But “Life does not end because I’m not riding at Saxo Bank." 

I dedicated him an early Yes we like and asked him for an interview a few times. I hope he will find a job and maybe that interview will arrive next year after a new good result. Good luck André!

Giro 2012 looks good

3.476,4 km, average stage distance 165,5 km, 2 ITT, 1 TTT, 7 sprinters stages, 4 low mountain stages 3 low mountain stages with top finish, 1 high mountain stage, 3 high mountain stages with top finish.

I was enjoying my trekking in the mountains near Lecco while the Giro 2012 was introduced to a large(r) and (more) aware audience.
The itinerary was out since days, the presentation was showed WWW in streaming and tv. Andy Schleck was supposed to not race the Giro so I was just a bit curious but not really interested.

I mean: I like the Giro, it's the most important race in my country and I always go to watch some stages. Of course I watch it all in tv - as I do with much smaller races in far places around the world. I even admit that the Giro was sometimes more beautiful then the Tour, less  'predicatable' and more balanced. However I remain a Tour addicted: I can lose a Giro stage but I am never so busy to not watch a Tour stage, even in the first - usually 'boring' - week. I like to be bored by those yellow fields and useless small climbs. I belove the mood in the Tour and the way French people are proud of it. 

The Giro is different or maybe I am different toward the Giro. I like when it passes close and allows me to have a good cycling day saving sleep hours - and money. Then cycling is cycling, cyclists make the race: they take a boring stage and invent a thrilling story. The opposite is also true. 

The Tour 2012 disappoints me a little - and not because it doesn't suit Andy Schleck, but because in my opinion it lacks of 'personality': no symbol stage, few top finishes, new roads ok but honestly they don't promise that much. That's why I decided to have a second look to the Giro itinerary.

I already found it balanced and nice, Danmark and megamountain stage excluded. Danmark because I am against start abroad in general, moreover so far. Megamountain because it's wonderful but too close to Milano: sprinters and cronomen should be allowed to make it to the end. Anyway, a good Giro. "Hard but not too hard" as Bruyneel said. But Andy Schleck already dismissed the idea this Giro would be better for him then that Tour. They all have plenty of time to think about.

BDW No, I don't like the Giro promo vid: too noisy, too emotional, too confusing. It could be any race. The TourTure commercial with the Rabobank car was absolutely better ;)

2. Galoppin says that Giro is his best SD memory: «Ce Giro 2007 et la deuxième place d'Andy Schleck restent mon meilleur souvenir de directeur sportif. Bon, il n'y a pas que ça quand même, mais avec Andy c'est sentimental»

3. So he is happy to be back to work with Andy and Frank Schleck
«Je vais retrouver Andy, Frank, Fabian (Cancellara). Pas mal de coureurs que je connais très bien et avec qui j'ai bien aimé bosser» 

4. Anyway he and Andy were in touch by phone during the last years: «On a parlé souvent ensemble et c'est vrai qu'Andy m'a régulièrement téléphoné ces dernières années. Il m'a dit qu'il était très content de me retrouver. Moi aussi." 

5. There is some work to do but Bruyneel is the right man to do it. Next TdF suits better Evans then Andy Schleck but Andy will have the best team: "Comme je n'étais plus dans leur équipe, j'ai pris le temps de les observer, j'ai vu qu'il y avait du travail à faire. Johan Bruyneel a l'expérience qu'il faut pour mener la barque. Avec l'apport des coureurs de RadioShack et dans la perspective des rapprochements d'équipes, même si a priori le Tour convient moins à Andy qu'à Cadel Evans par exemple, je pense que notre équipe sera sans doute la meilleure équipe de grand Tour.»

RIP SIC... in your mates words

Marco Simoncelli died today, few hours ago, racing. Like Wouter Weyland, like Senna, like others. They all died doing what they loved the most. Many cyclists reacted on twitter and fb. I copy and past a translation of few messages, the best words by his mates in sport who really know what they are talking about:

Daniele Bennati: "Ero davanti alla TV quando Sic e' caduto,mi e' sembrato di rivivere il dramma di WW,purtroppo anche Marco se n'e' andato.Riposa in Pace SIC" (I was in front of the tv when Sic fell, I felt as if I was living again WW drama, sadly Marco too is gone. RIP SIC.)

Matteo Carrara: "Quando la vuoi spianare il piu possibile,quando vuoi entrare piu veloce Dell'avversario,quando non lo vuoi far passare e lo vuoi staccare...non pensi alle conseguenze e' l'istinto che ti porta a farlo...tutto questo capita a qualsiasi sportivo che ha voglia di competizione e' l'adrenalina la voglia di dare tutto la voglia di vincere che ti porta a questo ma purtroppo ogni tanto la sfortuna ci mette del suo... Closing balance

The season is over - in Europe at least - and it's time of closing balance. UCI ranking is objective - given some criteria - but a different list could include racers who gave us great emotions even whitout a great result or also guys who had an impressive improvement or confirmed promises. UCI top ten for riders can't be different then that: GILBERT of course is the Number One, like a new Merckx he was hungry of victories and had a long big meal. CONTADOR is second: the Giro winner well deserved it even if his season was a less brilliant then it used to be: maybe he will be banned and lose all results TdF 2010 included... Quite ridiculous he's still waiting a sentence. RODRIGUEZ in 3th place is a surprise: no big bangs but 2 nice stage victories in Vuelta and many other good results. That's also a way to get points. EVANS, TdF winner is just 4th in spite he also won Romandie and Tirreno-Adriatico. 5th is VOECKLER: the French hero didn't win so much but wore the yellow jesey and that's something. TT World Champ Tony MARTIN is only 6th! and he DID win a lot this year, just like SAGAN Peter (7th): this one in my opinion is the name to remember for next years and the true good news in this top ten. Number 8th is Samuel SANCHEZ: many small good results for him too. The RR World Champ and winner of many many MANY sprints CAVENDISH is only 9th and a surprising SCARPONI is 10th.  I guess we wrote a different list thinking to 2011 races... No doubts about Gilbert in 1st, but Evans, Tony Martin, Cavendish and Sagan would get a better spot. Moreover I would add some guys that really did well: Wiggins, Goss, Daniel Martin, Mollema, Kittel, Froome, Denis Galimzyanov, Sacha Modolo... I'm not going to make a summary of the last season but who followed it all will remember the amazing moments we share. I was about to put also Jakob Fgslang here... then stoped: he was great in the Vuelta, got a lot of 5th places around the world but in my opinion can do much better.  Frank Schleck had a very good season: won Criterium International and Lux RR National Championship, was 2nd in Liège and 3th in TdF, plus other good results, in fact he is 15th in UCI ranking. Not so Andy Schleck: he is 21th, was second in TdF, wore the yellow jersey, win the queen stage on the Galibier - YUP - and Tour de Suisse mountain jersey, was 3th in Liège and also 2nd in TdF Mountain Classification. TdF was his goal and he didn't target seriously anything else.That's why I'm not satisfied with his results even if they are quite good. Probably that's unfair: Andy said he actually is happy and couldn't do more. He knows better, doesn't he? In 2007 3he was 38th (2nd in the Giro), in 2008 he was 57th (TdF White Jersey), in  2009 - his best season sofar - he was 15th (2nd in TdF plus White Jersey 1st in Liège and RR Lux national Championship) and in 2010 16th (2nd in TdF with 2 stages vistories, 1st in TT Lux national championship) so 2011 objectively wasn't that good. Will 2012 better? I hope so and am looking forward. I was often critical about LEOPARD TREK, his way to comunicate in first, the his race strategy and riders management. Looking to teams ranking I must admit that 3th isn't bad: LT had some very nice victories and good results the most by some young promising riders (Nizzolo, Selig, Klemme) or by guys you didn't expect (Zaugg but also Gerdeman, 'lost' since some years). His 'stars' were instead a bit disappointing (Bennati, Cancellara, Andy Schleck). Sky is numeber 1 and HTC 3th. But if you conisider victories - no points -  things are a little different and more close to our cyclin fan feeling: HTC is first here - what a shame it coudn't find a sponsor for 2012! -, Radio Shack 2nd and Liquigas 3th. Of course sprinters have a role here and each race bring 1 point - so we find in 4th Tabriz Petrochemical Cycling Team. In this ranking LT is only 15th and that shows why we are disappointed. Finally: next year some teams will stop and some others will start. HTC for sure, probably GEOX by one side, Green Edge by the other one. Some teams will 'change': LT will be... EHM... Bob! ok: Radio Shack Nissan Trek - last time I write it!! - Skill Shimano will be... an even more complicated stuff!! I wonder why people can't find easy short names.  Of course old teams will be 'new' too because transferts shuffled riders... like cards.
