Milano San Remo in quotes, full results and my opinion

 Embedded image permalink
I don't think that cycling is or should be an extreme sport. Riders are strong guys used to pain and fatigue, not used to complain and even too few used to protest. That isn't a reason to abuse of them. Yesterday San Remo in my opinion 1. has not been a San Remo but a completely different race 2. must have been cancealed as riders asked - obtaining at least to not climb the Manie. We are all amazed and riders are proud now that it's over and nothing too serious happened anybody but what they did has been wrong: keeping riding in such a cold, stopping, warming and starting again after hours. That is unhealty. But riders' health seems to be the last interest in this show. All winners, all heros, all warriors. I agree. But why a cyclist should be a warrior? It should be about intelligence, tactics, technic, guts not only about physical endurance. Road cycling isn't a marathon. That's a different sport. In add I think that the organizers sould have thought earlier about a different route given the weather forecast already well known since days before. In Tirreno like in San Remo: no, I don't like that way to manage races. I collected some quotes by riders and teams. My favourite is the first one:
Baden Cooke (124th): "I sincerely hope that all the Milano San Remo viewers enjoyed today's spectacle. We suffered like never before to bring you this TV drama."
Gerald Ciolek (1st): "This is simply unbelievable! Thank you @teamMTNQhubeka! I am speechless..."
Colbrelli (12th) : It has been a San Remo marked by bad weather... Snow, rain and cold, a lot of cold.... I have never seen something similar.... Riders crying because of cold.... I will never forget my first San Remo, nver. How it has gone then... I'm satisfied, sure. It was better if I got in the top ten but since next year already I'll try harder, aware I can do well....
Manuel Belletti (DNF) To be unable to command your body, can't talk, still don't feel your feet fingers... Today I got really scared.
Geraint Thomas (DNF) Well you freeze your balls off all day and slap off at the worst time. So annoying!! Good to see Stannard fly the flag though!

Neil Stephens (DS ORICA-GE): "I wanted to tell them [...] to get off + stay off the bike. Instead I had to do the opposite"

Peter Sagan (2nd) "I was looking to Chavanel, Ciolek surprised me. I did wrong only the sprint. Shortned race didn't go how after 300 km" [source RAI]
Tom Jelte Slagter (DNF) "I went on until I really could no longer. I was so cold. I still feel weird. I've never felt so bad on a bike.”

Daryl Impey (47th): "That was the coldest and most miserable day on the bike ever.Big congrats to Ciolek for the win. Time to defrost"
Greg Henderson (90th) ‏: "Everyone in MSR deserves a pat on the back.I crossed a few of my own boundaries 2day. Mostly temperature related. Proud to finish 2 b honest."

Sacha Modolo (DNF): "Sport result a part, today I lived a life experience I will bring with me all my life long. I'll tell it my grandchildren."

Scinto Luca(TM fantini selle italia) Today race officials managed to give me a fee: Gatto had frozen hands and must change his gloves, we helped him."

Alessandro Proni (95th): "First one complaining about heat in Matteotti I'll break his legs"

Vincenzo Nibali: (DNF) "One of the moments I thought I pick the wrong sport!"

KenSommer "I am crying... crying like a baby! #ciolek ..absolut geil für @GeraldCiolek und @TeamMTNQhubeka"

Fabian Cancellara (3rd): "Today evry rider in #MSR2013 is a winner... of course congrats to @TeamMTNQhubeka #ciolek"

Mark Cavendish (9th) ‏: "Fucking. Freezing."

Filippo Pozzato (33rd): "I'm pissed off!!!! Not coz I didn't win but coz @Ilgerva77 [Paolini] dropped me.... And now I'm finished [mean: very tired] just wait for my tw! #bastard! Congrats anyway"
