Volta a Catalunya 1: Mezgec

The camera missed the line!!!
A narrow streed climbing in the green, a blooming peach tree, the peloton in a long line chasing hard the break-away - Boris Vallee (Lotto) and Romain Lemarchand (Cofidis) joined by Ametz Txurruka down the Alto de Montsent. Beautiful Catalunya... nostalgia of nothing...
Break caught, several attacks -  Arredondo, Brambilla, Martens, then Pozzovivo. A last one by Romain Hardy (Cofidis), Wilco Kelderman (Belkin) and Mickael Cherel (Ag2r) with 12 km to go. Then Kelderman solo after his break mates had taken the wrong way on a roundabout! Caught. Bunch sprint: Luka Mezgec won.
The first break-away
It was just the begining but have a look to the main contenders of this short tour: for Garmin Sharp Dan Martin, for Team Katusha Rodriguez, for Movistar Team Quintana, for Tinkoff-Saxo Contador, for Omega Pharma - Quick-Step Uran, for Team Sky Froome and Porte, for AG2R La Mondiale Betancur and Pozzovivo, for Astana Fuglsang, for Belkin Kelderman, for BMC van Garderen, for FDJ Pinot and Geniez, for Lampre - Merida Horner, for Lotto Belisol van den Broeck, for Orica GreenEDGE Clarke, for Team Europcar Voeckler and Rolland, for  Team Giant-Shimano Luka Mezgec and Warren Barguil, for  Trek Factory Racing Nizzolo and  Arredondo, finally for  Caja Rural - Seguros RGA a certain Sanchez...
I think it's a great start list: it's going to be a great Volta and I'm looking forward to watch it all!

From Febraury training camp! IMPRESSIVE!
What Luka Mezgec said:
“It was a hard day today and I suffered a but on the climbs but the guys kept me going and supported me well. With 3km to go Warren Barguil brought me into position and then after that Georg Preidler took me right to the front with 1km to race. I lost a few places and had to go from far out to get through. Someone tried to box me in against the barriers but I was able to come through and get it at the end. Last week’s win was great for the confidence and together with good legs and a great team that makes the difference. We will try to defend the jersey tomorrow but after that the race will become very difficult.

What Julian Alaphilippe said:
"I tried to do the sprint today. I am super happy for the first podium of my career as a professional. It's kind of bittersweet as this opportunity to go for a win doesn't always happen. I was there, but more or less at 400 meters from the finish I had contact with other guys and almost crashed, so I lost my speed. I launched my sprint again, but it was really hard to win at that point and to do better than this. But, I had power in the legs and that is satisfying. It was a stressful day. I have to thank my teammates, especially Pieter Serry and Gianluca Brambilla, who were there with me to lead me out and did a good job protecting me. It was a hectic sprint, a bit risky, but in any case I am happy about my race today. I am an attacker. Not the best on the climbs, or the sprints, but I try to defend myself everywhere. When I was young I won some sprints in small groups and mass sprints, so we will see what can happen. But to me I know this race, as well as this year, will be a learning process. I'm thankful to OPQS for developing me through their youth program, ETIXX, and giving me a chance to ride for them professionally. It's a joy to ride my bike for OPQS and I will try learn as much as I can from my teammates at the next races."

Team Sky about Richie Porte
"Richie Porte finished 2:58 down on the lead group with the support of team-mates Danny Pate and Josh Edmondson after not feeling his best. Sports Director Nicolas Portal said: "Richie felt okay in training but today he felt a bit empty. We'll see how he goes day by day and if he begins to improve we're sure he will be able to play a role for himself and for Froomey. The team will keep a close eye on him."
