Cycling So Far: Romandie and Turkey Sum Up, looking to the Giro

Chris Froome wins Romandie
I'm enjoying a break. It's not a break-away - I'm not going far - and it's not even enjoyable to tell it all because, actually, it's more like a convalescence. We had a few days off here in Italy, a sum of holydays and week-ends. The weather was bad. No way to go to the country, no will to do anything if you ask me, nor even to watch cycling. Only exception: the queen stage of the Tour of Romandie. But I kept myself up-to-date.
Somebody is back: Mark Cavendish, Rein Taaramae, Chris Froome... Somebody is good: Michael Albasini, Martin Kohler, Johann Tschopp, Mathias Frank (what a season of pride for Switzerland!), Elia Viviani, Adam Yates... The last deserves something more than that: he's VERY good, considering it's a neo-pro. We are not surprised because we were waiting for that.
Somebody is unlucky: Michael Kwiatowski and Theo Bos just to say some names. Somebody still have to work: Andre Greipel (recovering), Darwin Atapuma, Nicolas Roche, Ivan Basso (...), Kenny Ellissonde, Rui Costa, Vincenzo Nibali...
Maybe I sound strict toward Nibali and Costa because they finished in the top 5. But in the only stage I watched they weren't as brilliant as they used to be. Nibali admitted it. Costa is struggling to get a top resul... in the best Rainbow Jersey's tradition. They both will ride the Tour, so they both have time.
The Giro d'Italia is about to start. Where do the main contenders stand?
Good itt for young Zoidl
Astana Scarponi finished 8th in Trentino, while AG2R Pozzovivo really made the show (2nd), Androni Pellizzotti scored a good 9th and Bardiani Bongiorno and Zardini placed in the top 20. Belkin Kelderman did a very good Paris-Nice and a good Vuelta a Catalunya, then I lost his track. Belkin squad for the Giro doesn't look terrific anyway... I guess they are strongely targeting the Tour. BMC Cadel Evans won the Trentino and is going to be a favourite in the Giro. I'm sorry for Ratto instead, because Cannondale keeps prefering the old-boiled Basso to him, who performed better and is a well promising youth. Maybe he - or Moreno Moser - will grab the leadership on the road... Colombia is a bit a trick... or rather a bluff. Are they going to show anything? I wait. FDJ comes for the sprints, with Boahnni and Souppe, and brings Geniez for stages/GC (4th in Algarve, he did a good Tirreno and a decent Romandie, not super). Garmin should avoid to bring Hesjedal to the Giro after his doping - post re - confession, and gives Dan Martin a bigger support. The Irishman crashed in Liège, nothing was brocken - heart a part - and he should be a serious contender in that what is his main goal for the season. His shape wasn't 100% so far, aiming to pick in May... so there we go.
Adam Yeates wins Queen Stage in Turkey
Lampre Cunego looked very good in Catalunya, less good in the Ardennes. Maybe he's going to have a role again in his homeland biggest race. Lotto Belisol doesn't seem serious about next Giro, they will probably go for break-aways and lucky stages' wins. Or I'm wrong: surprise me! Movistar has got Adriano Malori for the itt and he's in a good moment. Nairo Quintana had a great start of the season, winning San Luis, shining in Tirreno and Catalunya. Then he took a break, opting for training as Giro preparation. So we can't tell where he stands, nor can he. In my opinion Romandie should have been a useful test. Rabottini and Finetto made it to the top 10 in Trentino for Neri Sottoli and the first one could be a  stage winner in the Giro or fight for the Mountain Jersey. They are good guys but I don't like to see a cheaters' team (Di Luca, Santambrogio) rewarded by a wild card while others (Qhubeka) are left at home.
Elia Viviani double victory in Turkey
OPQS looks very strong, Rigoberto Uran started racing early this year and with good results but at the moment doesn't seem in a super shape. The Giro lasts three weeks so that could even be an advantage. A favourite for sure. Both Meyer and Weening are not up to the expectations this year - at least to mine! - but ORICA-GE brings to the Giro a quite good squad.. Europcar has got Rolland and Malacarne, maybe good for a stage win. Giant-Shimano aims to sprints with Kittel and Mezgec. Katusha is a very strong team: Purito Rodriguez has been unlucky in the Ardennes but be sure he's going to fight for pick. Team Sky, I already wrote about - http://allezandy.blogspot.it/2014/04/giro-team-sky-squad-confirmed-riders.html - and I'm glad to see that Dario Cataldo has been confirmed as the team leader. They are not the favourites but it's going to be interesting with guys like Swift and Boasson Hagen (relatively free). Nicholas Roche is not doing well honestly so I expect Majka to step soon as Tinkoff-Saxo leader. And he has got a chance. I already wrote about TFR - http://allezandy.blogspot.it/2014/05/giro-ditalia-baffi-realistic-preview.html - and Romandie confirmed what I said about the young Zoidl, while at the sprint Nizzolo is ready. Rober Kiserlovski is a good man for the GC (not for the win, miracle exlcuded).
Sum up, my favourite for the Giro are: Uran, Rodriguez, Evans, Pozzovivo, Martin, maybe Cunego  and Quintana, with Majka as a possible black horse.
