Cyclocross Season Statistics, Sum Up and an exclusive interview with Lars van der Haar

In the picture standing: Rob Peeters, Lars van der Haar, Mathieu van der Poel, Klaas Vantornout, Wout Van Aert. Down: Bart Wellens, Sven Nys and Tom Meeusen.

Preparing this article I had a short chat with Lars van der Haar.

Ilaria: Hello Lars, I'm writing a sum up article about the cross season and I'd need to know how many races did you do this season and how many the last one. I think this season they are more but a number would be better
LarsI'm not entirely sure. But I think I was doing 34 races this season. Or 33.
Ilaria:... and last year less because you didn't do all the series right?
LarsYes indeed.
Ilaria: I'm trying to do a bit of statistics but it isn't my cup of tea...
LarsAlways hard eh!
Ilaria: Yep  but interesting. You said your goal was to be on top 3 in all series, I'm checking how top riders did in each race considering the top 5. The rsult should be a grafic of the general consistency of everybody.
LarsI wanted to be top 3 in 2 GC. And I'm that now. And also in UCI. So maybe even 3.
Ilaria: Indead.
LarsAnd I'm more consistent in top 3/5. Just not more wins. But that's because those younger guys came over. And they just are really good.
Ilaria: I think you are right. You had a lot of 4 and some 5 this year. Then you know, each race is a story, sometimes it's amechanical problem or a bad day. Numbers don't tell all.
Lars: Exactly. But more then half of my races were top 3. At the moment I have done 29 races, shortly counting them, 25 in top 5 and 15 podium places. And 5 wins.
Ilaria: Yes that is the impression I get watching the results, then it takes time to put all together. And I'm only considering series, not all races, because you also won some races out of them.
LarsYes I did.
Ilaria: But sum up how do you feel about your season?
LarsGood. I just didn't expect Mathieu (van der Poel) and Wout(van Aert)being this good. I'd have won more if not. But I'm happy. I got stronger and better.
Ilaria: Good, because I think you should be happy with it. It has been a solid season.

Here I picked the top 5 results in the series. Consider that Lar van der Haar also won some races out of them.

Progressive score for each rider
Diagrams
In the 1st diagram you can see how each rider did during the season. I picked the above results, and assigned a value to each result: 1st = 5, 2nd = 4 and so on, less then 5th or not taking part = 0.
In the 2nd diagram you can see each rider's success' share, considering not only wins but top 5.
In the 3rd diagram you have the total score for each rider, according with my value scale.

Conclusions
Others could analyse better those data, but as far as I understand them I'd say that Kevin Pauwels had the best season, not only the most successful but also the most consistent. Van der Poel and van Aert had many high scores but they did less races. Vantornout and Nys both did less races and had lower scores. Tom Meeusen did almost all races but got the lowerst scores. Van der Haar is the only one who both did almost all the considered races and scored almost always in the top 5.
How success has been shared considering top 5
My aim was to evalue the consistency of each rider during the whole season and I'd say that Lars van der Haar has been, with Kevin Pauwels, the most consistent rider.
Another conclusion is that Sven Nys didn't performe that bad - in the races I considered. We are used to see him winning all but his season has been good, better than Klaas Vantornout's.
U23 van der Poel and van Aert have been a factor in the season, especially in the last part of it. When they races they often dominated, but we mustn't forget that they did less races, just like van der Haar last year and probably less.
Finally: statistics are cool but racing is more than numbers.
