Tour of Qatar 2: SMASHED but...

Embedded image permalinkSand storm, not just windy. And OPQS pulling as hell to split the peloton. Successfully.
No images till the finish.
Tom Boonen drops all GC contenders and makes things clear, especially for Wiggins.
With less than 25k to go in a very fluid situation a small group is in front, not more than 15 riders, including OPQS Boonen, Terpstra and Maes but also a great Jasper Stuyven (TFR), Adam Blythe (ORICA-GE)...
At the sprint though Tom Boonen gets lost, he's only 5th, while Kristoff takes the stage win and also the leader jersey.

"On a positive note; we got a 4h peeling session for free! #sandstorm #tourdevoss"

Team Giant-Alpecin coach Marc Reef:
“From the beginning on there was a big fight and the race was flat out. Much like yesterday we were there from the beginning and well represented at the front, with the guys riding well together as a team. It settled after this though and the race came back together.
We knew that after the first sprint would be an important point but we only managed to get two guys in the front split – two riders too few really. There were 36 riders in the front with Nikias and Stammie. Stammie had to let go first, and then Nikias after as the group got smaller and smaller. A group came back to Nikias with Tom V and Bert and they got close to catching the leaders but on the line there was still 15 seconds.”

Marcel Kittel after the stage

Nikias Arndt:
“From the beginning on it was really hectic and nervous. From I think kilometre three the race split into three groups. We had several of us in the front but there was only ever around a minute gap so it was full gas for over 50km. When it eventually eased off the race came back together a group did go away.
It started again though about 10km before the first sprint. We were not in the best position here and only Stammie and I made it into the front group. It was good to be there with two of us but we were fewer than other teams so it was always quite hard to get back into the line after turn on the front. We did the best we could and Stammie put me in a good position before he lost contact. Every five kilometres it was in the gutter – it was full gas and crazy. Around five guys would get dropped each time.
I saw we were coming to a turn and tried to jump up to the front before this but I couldn’t get back in the line after this and I got dropped. We still chased full gas behind and when Tom V and Bert caught me we got pretty close but it was too late. At least the time gap is not too long – we will see what is coming in the next few days.”

Tom Boonen:
"Today was a windy stage, but there was also a lot of sand blowing with the wind. It was a sand storm at the start. The conditions were heavy and there were also a lot of kilometers to cover. It was a long, hard day and at the end it was a very demanding race. We controlled well and I think in the end, with three guys in the 15 who decided the stage, I think the situation wasn't bad at all. But with how demanding the race was I think we were all a bit tired in the end. Kristoff deserved the win today. The guy with a little bit in the reserves won. I'll do my best in the time trial tomorrow, even if it doesn't suit my skills. Niki Terpstra is also close in the GC and think the defending overall winner can be a factor again this year."

Andre Schulze (Bora-Argon):
“Given the weather conditions, everyone knew that the race will be difficult right from the start and that a bunch sprint is rather unlikely today. So, gusts of wind and sandstorms made our day. After two kilometers there were the first echelons and groups already. From this point on, one can only try to survive. Ralf raced very strongly today and he was part of the leading group. The same is true for Daniel, who rode in the front group for a long time. He had to let the final leading group let go only ten, fifteen kilometers before the finish line, which is absolutely fine considering the riders’ level here. We’ll save our energy in the time trial tomorrow. There are still some sprints coming up that we want to be part of”

Adam Blythe (ORICA-GE):
"Hard hard hard day in the saddle today! Full gas from Km 0. Nice to have great @ORICA_GreenEDGE team mates in there looking out for me!"

Luke Rowe (Team Sky):
“I think ‘smashfest’ pretty much sums up today’s stage. As soon as the flag dropped it split into five or six groups and that was it for the first 80km. Then it all came back together. I was in the front when it split the first time and then once it was back together it split again quite soon after. And that was the race pretty much done.
It kept splitting again and again and narrowing down. It whittled down to 15 guys left at the finish with me and Stannard. It was a big day out for us!
They couldn’t actually televise the race because of the sand storms. There was actually sand residue building up on the road in the cross-wind sections. Every now and then you’d be going 65-70km/h and you’d hit a layer of sand and be going sideways. The visibility was terrible too so it was quite epic.
There was a 7km neutral section and we all knew that as soon as the race started it would split. It was the most nervous neutral section I’ve ever done! But it’s just one of those things. You’ve got to be in the right place at the right time and have the legs to back it up. Luckily me and Ian did. We spoke and neither of us had much left coming into the finish to contest the sprint. But on the positive side of it we’ve got good positions to go for this time trial tomorrow. I think Stannard can definitely get up there and be not far off the win. For myself hopefully I can be in a top-10 position this time tomorrow night. That’s the goal and I think it’s realistic.”

Jasper Stuyven:
It’s pretty hard to get into the echelon when you are alone, it takes a lot of energy by yourself, especially when some other teams have two or three guys there. I tried to do my best, but if you look at the sprint everyone was in the saddle, not standing up, so I think it was a really hard day for everyone, and we were all at the limit.
You have to be focused from the start. [You can lose contact] any second because there was always some crosswind, and you have to be ready every moment. In the beginning you can sprint to the front if you are a little too far back, but in a stage like today, you pay at the end if you did too much early on. There was a sandstorm out there today at the start, and again a little at the end. It was just a brutal day.
We decided to go hard together as a team at the beginning and that was going pretty well until some crashes happened, and we were only three in the front group. And even though the others came back on later, they were caught at the back fighting and the echelons started again, and then it was just me and Boy in the lead group.
It was just a really hard day, and hard finale. All day long it was echelons and a lot of wind. With around 20 -25k to go BMC made another acceleration and that is where Boy [van Poppel] was caught out with more riders.
Tomorrow the TT is on the normal road bike, and for sure I am going to go full-gas. I pushed some good numbers on the last day of the Vuelta last year, it was also 10 kilometers, so we will see. I am feeling good these days, but I am not a specialist in the TT. All I can do is give it a go and then we will see where we are. After that it’s up to me to keep focus for the rest of the week.”

Team Qhubeka DS J.P Heynderickx:
"Today was a horrible, horrible day. Some riders just weren't positioned well at all today. We also had a lot of bad luck with a number of punctures. Theo was actually in a good position in a good break but had to brake when there was a crash in front of him. He lost some places and then it split up immediately after that so he was pretty upset about that. If he didn't have that problem then he would've been in the front group."

Peter Sagan (new White Jersey):
“It was a really tough day. We had headwind at the start, which then soon after turned into crosswind and lasted for almost the rest of the stage. It was a battle throughout the day with many splits and gaps. Overall, I think it was a good day for me and for Tinkoff-Saxo, as we had two guys in the leading group. I’m very motivated and we all look forward to tomorrow’s time trial, which will be very important”.

Van Avermaet:
"I will see how it goes. I have spent a lot of energy the first two days already. Last year, I did a good time trial and there is not a specialist up front (in the overall standings). So if I can stay close to Tom Boonen and the other guys, that will be good. I am feeling pretty good. The breakaways were not as long as normal, but I feel my form is good. It is a good sign for the classics.
It was a hard sprint with the tailwind. They surprised us a little from the back so I had to close the gap and then Kristoff started his sprint. So it was hard to come over him. I think I did a good sprint to get third place."

BMC DS Valerio Piva:
"It was crazy from the start, with all kinds of sand on the roads. When the group split to 40 riders, we had Greg, Marcus, Philippe Gilbert and Jempy Drucker [who had a mechanical problem] there. But then Gilbert had a flat at a moment the car was not behind him, so he was dropped."

Matteo Trentin:
"Typical Qatar lunchride:
✅ride full gas in a crosswind sandstorm
✅repeat it few times
✅loose the 1st group
✅full gas in the 2nd group

✅done"
