Giro 1: GREEN goes PINK

Simon Gerrans:
"I think technically we can be very happy," Gerrans said at the line. We set a really fast time, and left it all out there.
It was planned that I would be the first over the line. It's an enormous honour to wear the Maglia Rosa. This team has built a reputation for Team Time Trials, and we have some real specialists here, so this result is a credit to them.
Hopefully my season starts again today. It's been very hard so far but hopefully there are really good things to come."
“If I could chop the front of this jersey into nine pieces and share it amongst my teammates I would. Then the back of the jersey needs to be chopped into about 50 pieces for everyone involved in the ORICA-GreenEDGE organisation because it’s a real credit to everybody within the team that we have these successes.
We weren’t quite sure what to expect with the bike path but it ended up being a fantastic course, a little technical in parts but very fast. Then with the head wind we had, it really suited the strong team we had here.
I’ve had a difficult start to this year but I said all along things can change really quickly and I can’t think of a better way.
Embedded image permalinkI hope everyone in Australia stayed up late to watch the stage and I hope my mates in Mansfield understand the significance of this win here and why I am wearing a pink shirt.

Rigoberto Uran:
"I think it was a nice day for us. We did a good team time trial. It was a bit more windy than yesterday, and that made the course even harder. It would have been difficult to win today because there are teams like Orica-GreenEDGE that are more structured in the 2015 Giro for this kind of effort. But we are happy. We prepared well for this race and we can't complain about a 4th place finish. Starting tomorrow it is basically a whole new race. It will be a difficult first week including a difficult 3rd stage and even an uphill finish in the 5th stage. But what we learned from the last Giro d'Italia is that everyday something can happen. We will do our best and look forward to the next days."

Richie Porte:
"I think we were good today. Everyone was smooth and solid. We did a good job. The race is not going to be won today. At the end of the day it's seconds now but it's going to be minutes in the end. You can get carried away during the whole first week about losing seconds. It's not ideal to lose time but it's not the end of the world.
It's nice to just get the race started. Coming in here I feel fresh and ready to keep fighting."

Kristof Vandewalle
“Lots of narrow roads, but it was a fast course. Yesterday in the recon we had the wind in our favor and today it was a headwind, which made it a little bit harder. For the first part, we immediately had a good speed, but we lost three guys. In the second part you could feel we had a harder time, some guys didn’t have the power to stay on the front and pull and we lost some precious seconds. I think on the first part we were on scheme to beat the best times, but in the last part we felt the efforts. But overall a good performance, better than in Romandie.
For me, I felt good – I made some long pulls to keep the speed up and help the others recover. And I could hold it to the end so I am pretty happy with my performance.”

Giacomo Nizzolo:
“My feeling today was not bad. I think we did our best and when we compare our time to some of the teams who are strong in the TTT, I think we can be happy and confident for the other stages.  Everyone knows what happened last year when I was really close [to victory] several times, so this year I want to go to the top of the podium for once, at least.”

Steven Kruijswijk:
“We did a good team time trial given our abilities. There will always be points for improvement, but everyone did what he could and we went pretty fast. The time differences with the other teams are small, as you can see in the results.
I wanted to contribute today, but we have a couple of big engines in the team and I had to be careful not to blow up. I’m glad I was able to do my job. Everyone is fit. We can build on that.”
