Tour of Romandie 5: In the Rain, Pinot

Embedded image permalinkIt's raining. The breaking duo Belkov and Naulleau had till 9'40" but aproaching the second climb of the day, La Petite Forclaz (1st cat),  the gap is down to 4'40". Belkov decides to go solo. He's got 1'25" 25 km to go. The peloton is still compact and doesn't split on the climb.
18 km to go the break- away is ove. The finish is on Champex-Lac (1st cat): 14.2 km, 7% average gradient, max ramp 13%.  Up they go. A select group has formed. 6 km to Bardet attacks with Majka but they are caught. In front there are Froome, Uran, Nibali, Spilak, Majka, Bardet and Zakarin.
Bardet attacks again. Zakarin joins. T.Pinot gets off the group. Froome accelerates, Nibali and Uran can't follow. Bardet is caught while Pinot is going solo. 2 km to go. Zakarin  tries to bridge, he can't but while Pinot wins solo he grabs grab the leader jersey. 3rd is Bardet, then the favourites group. It's still raining.

Romain Bardet:
"Cycling isn't just about attacking. Making the move at the right time is an other thing. Well deserved win @ThibautPinot !"

Robert Gesink:
“This feels like a magnificent performance to me. I’m glad with my level at the moment. I am still missing some power, which I noticed at the foot of the final climb when the tempo was upped, but I’m strong and my endurance is fine. I gave all I had, which enabled me to pick up a lot of riders on my way to the top.
This was a serious test in a strong field of riders and it went well. At this moment, there’s no shame for me in losing about a minute to the winner.”
