Volta ao Algarve 2: LL Sanchez

The longest and one of the toughest stages. No live streaming!
Seven riders are in the lead: Cecchin, De Bie, Koch, Lastra, Mestre, Naesen and Rast.
After 140 km only three riders are still away and they pass in this order the 3rd category climb: 1st Olivier Naesen (IAM), 2nd Sean de Bie (Lotto), 3rd Ricardo Mestre (W52). Rast and Lastra follow at 34", the peloton is at 1'35".
40 km to go the break is caught and the peloton compact.

30 km to go IAM's Dries Devenyns attacks. A small group joins from the peloton, including the main favourites. All together 15 km to go, flying toward Alto de Foia (7.5 km, 5.8%).
Alberto Contador is first on the penultimate climb, 2nd is Diego Rosa, 3rd Ilnur Zakarin. A crash 11 km to go brings down several riders including Astana and Movistar's.
On the last cimb: Stybar, Rosa, Oliveira and Gesink attack. 6 km to go. Cold and windy atop. 2 km to go the attackers has got a slight  8''  advantage.
Not sure how yet, but LL Sanchez won.

LL Sanchez:
“I’m super happy for today victory in front of so many super strong rivals! I knew my condition was good but I didn’t know how I could perform on an uphill finish like this – explained the European Champion of the Astana Pro Team – when Thomas attacked I was looking at Contador waiting for his reply. The wind was so strong on our left but I had good legs. Then I decided to reply myself and I had been able to overtake Thomas and win this difficult stage. I want to thank all my teammates who really helped my today. Also, a special dedication is for my family who is doing many sacrifice with me so many days away from home… this win is a way to say thanks. Tomorrow there is the individual time trial where normally I’m quite good… let’s see what will happen”

Geraint Thomas:
"Surprised with the amount of Brits down here in the Algarve sun! Thanks for the support 👍💪"

Primoz Roglic:
“Today, I proved that I’m able to ride strongly. The best riders in the world are in this race and I was able to compete with them. That makes me very happy. It surprised me that I was able to stay strong. I know that I’m good, but riders like Alberto Contador and Fabio Aru were around me. I wasn’t nervous, though. When I had the chance to win the stage, I just tried to finish as well as possible. Unfortunately, two riders were faster than me.”

Robert Gesink:
"Perfect performance by roommate @rogla finishing 3rd and the rest of @LottoJumbo_road working hard to put us in position! #Thanks"

Jelle Wallays:
"After a crash in the sprint preparatoin yesterday. I survived the queenstage today. That's like a victory to me @VAlgarve2016 #nevergiveup."

Tony Martin:
"I didn't feel too good today, the legs weren't super, but I still managed to defend pretty well on the climb. Now I'm happy and optimistic about tomorrow. I will give it my best and at the end of the time trial we'll see where I stand in the general classification."

Zdenek Stybar:
"I knew the downhill from last year, so that's why I decided to go there, immediately after Diego Rosa made his move. I said I have nothing to lose, because if you don't try, you never win. So I attacked, found my rhythm and rode like this. Then Gesink came with two other guys, including Rosa, and we rode at a good pace, but the bunch caught up with one kilometer to go and in the last 500 meters it was too tough for me. In the end, I can consider myself satisfied, considering the quality of the field in Algarve and also that today's strong wind".

Tiago Machado:
"We had orders from (director) José to follow Contador and Aru and that’s what we did. In the last km several guys attacked and I was waiting for Alberto to attack, but maybe he didn’t have good legs today.  By the time I started to follow the guys, I didn’t have time to close the gap and catch them. But, there is still the time trial coming up and the finish in Malhão on Sunday  is my lucky finish here. Maybe I can move up on the GC then. I only miss a few seconds, but seconds here are like minutes in big tours. Certainly, it could be worse, but let’s see how things looks after tomorrow’s TT. I do feel like I have good legs".
