Giro 14: TAPPONE!

That means: 'fucking long hard mountain stage'. I think today it's appropriate.
There is a very large break including Axel Domont, Hugo Houle (Ag2r La Mondiale), Andrey Zeits (Astana), Nicola Boem, Francesco Manuel Bongiorno, Sonny Colbrelli (Bardiani - CSF), Darwin Atapuma (BMC Racing), Moreno Moser, Nathan Brown (Cannondale), Kanstantsin Siutsou (Dimension Data), David De La Cruz, Matteo Trentin (Etixx-QuickStep), Sergey Firsanov (Gazprom-RusVelo), Stefan Denifl (IAM Cycling), Diego Ulissi, Valerio Conti, Sacha Modolo, Manuele Mori (Lampre-Merida), Tim Wellens, Pim Ligthart, Maxime Monfort (Lot Soudal), Carlos Betancur, José Herrada (Movistar), Damiano Cunego, Giacomo Berlato (NIPPO-Vini Fantini), Ruben Plaza (Orica GreenEDGE), Georg Preidler (Giant-Alpecin), Egor Silin, Rein Taaramae (Katusha), Twan Castelijns, Primoz Roglic (Lotto NL-Jumbo), David Lopez, Nicolas Roche (Sky), Laurent Didier (Trek-Segafredo), Matteo Busato, Daniel Martinez (Wilier-Southeast).
At the top of the Passo Pordoi they had  7'06" on the peloton. That's the first KOM of the day. Damiano Cunego wins on Stefan Denifl and David López García.
After the KOM the front group split. Lopez goes solo on the first slopes of Passo Sella, the 2nd KOM of the day. Betancur, Fuglsang has been stopped and is back in the peloton. Several riders lost contact. The news comes that Bert De Backer quit.
Definitely Team Sky has guts! David Lopez Garcia won the 2nd KOM.
Nibali sprints to gets the 4' bonification.
Atapuma and Roche joined Lopez Garcia. So now there are two Sky riders in front. Other riders are bridging
A new break-away forms including 13 riders: Domont, Zeits, Atapuma, Moser, Siutsou, De La Cruz, Monfort, Cunego, Plaza, Preidler, Kochetkov, Lopez, Roche. Passo Gardena: the 3rd KOM of the day. The gap is 8'.  Plaza Molina attacks the break.  Lopez, De La Cruz and Atapuma follow. Plaza Molina is 1st at the KOM.
Passo Campolongo (2nd cat. 6 km, 5.8% average): the 4th KOM of the day. The news comes that Ryder Hesjedal abandoned due to stomach problems.
75 km to go Plaza has 47" on De la Cruz, Atapuma and Lopez, 1'18" on the group with Siutsou and 9'09" on the peloton.
Atapuma, De La Cruz and Lopez have been caught by the group with Monfort. They are 1'20" behind Plaza. Sioutsou is virtually in pink.
Colle Santa Lucia. The next KOM is a the top of the Passo Giau: 9.8 km long, averages 9.4% , 14% maximum.
Moser lost contact as well as Cunego.
46 km to go Team Astana takes the lead in the peloton. Only Sioutsou, Roche, Atapuma and Preidler are left in the first chasing group. Still 6 km to go to the KOM and Plaza Molina looks cooked.
45 km to go Roche and Preidler are dropped. In the Maglia Rosas's group there is also a big selction. Steven Kruijswijk is still there with team mate Battaglin. Amador and Valverde are the only Movistar riders in the group. Vincenzo Nibali is with Scarponi. Chaves, Pozzovivo, Nieve, Zakarin and Maika are also there. Cannondale has got 2 riders here: Ciccone and Uran.
46 km to go Plaza Molina is caught by Atapuma and Sioutsou. Bob Jungels suddely gives up and the group split.
The news comes that Demare, Niemic and Brandle also quit.
2 km to the Passo Giau: Amador is dropped. Nieve also lost contact. 11 riders are left in the group with Valverde.
42 km to go Siutsou and Atapuma have 4'34'' on the group with Nibali and Valverde and 5'08'' on the (ex) Maglia Rosa Amador.
Atapuma is 1st on KOM of the Passo Giau, 2nd  Siutsou, 3rd Preidler. Behind Mikel Nieve is back in the group with Nibali. It's about 10 degrees and there is the snow. Descent: in front and behind they are flying down like a stone. At the KOM Amador was almost 1' to Nibali who's now virtually in Pink but in the flat toward Valparola the gap is just 15''.
In front Preidler joined Atapuma and Siutsou.
Passo Valparola (2nd cat. 11.5 km, 5.8% average, 14% max.) is the last KOM but not the last climb. 30 km to go Amador is back in the group with Nibali.
27 km to go Nibali attacks,  Kruijswijk on his wheel. Valverde doesn't react. Chaves joins. In front Atapuma goes solo.
25 km to go Uran, Majka and Zakarin join Nibali, Kruijswijk  and Chaves. They have already more than 40'' on the group with Valverde. Kruijswijk attacks. Nibali and Chaves follow. The rest is dropped.
22 km to go Chaves joins Kruijswijk while Nibali is dropped. In the group with Valverde there are also two Sky riders - Roche and Nieve - Pozzovivo, Amador, Scarponi, Uran, Dupond and Fuglsang.
21 km to go Atapuma is solo in front, Preidler and Siutsou at 30'', Chaves and Kruijswijk at 1'10'', Nibali at 1'30'',  Valverde at 3'20''.
Passo Valparola: Atapuma wins the KOMChaves and Kruijswijk join Siutsou and Preidler. Nibali is chasing solo. Descent!
17 km to go Atapuma has 21" on Chaves, Kruijswijk, Siutsou and Preider, 1'02" on Nibali and 3'39" on the group with Valverde and Amador. The (ex) Pink Jersey suffered on the climb but is now leading in the descent. The last climb, Muro del Gatto, is only  1300 meters and a 19% maximum gradient !
10 km to go Atapuma has 34" on Chaves, Kruijswijk, Siutsou and Preider, 1'01" on Nibali and 3'21" on the group with Valverde and Amador.
4 km to go Atapuma is on the Muro. Sioutsou lost contact as Chaves, Kruijswijk and Preider start the climb. Nibali joins Sioutsou.
2 km to go Chaves, Kruijswijk and Preidler join Atapuma. Last km, a sprint uphill: Preidler starts first, Atapuma is dropped but Chaves is the fastest. But Kruijswijk gets the Pink jersey!

Esteban Chaves:
"Mamma mia! this is a dream!"
“After 5,000metres of climbing I’m tired but I’m really really happy. Winning the Queen stage at the Giro d’Italia is really special. This is not only for me but for the team who worked really well today. I want to thank everyone involved with ORICA-GreenEDGE because this team is like a big family. Everyone was riding at their limits. Kruijswijk started his attack then I tried to follow. It was a steep climb and then we saw Nibali was dropped so we started to work together. There is a lot of this race left and this is great but we will see what happens tomorrow.”

Steven Kruijswijk:
"I was feeling really good. I knew Nibali was going to attack. When he went I was on his wheel. Our plann was to attack tomorrow but I was feeling good so I tried."
"All day, I felt very well. I knew that after yesterday that this stage would be good for me. In the end, I could attack. I still power in my legs. Chaves joined and we worked well together, but I also knew that he would be the man to beat for the stage win. He also wanted to grab more time on the other classification riders and I was going for the pink jersey. It worked out well and I am very happy that I have it now!"

Bob Jungels:
"I didn't feel too bad until they really went full gas on Giau, which was really hard. I remembered that climb since going over it in the U23 ranks and since then I noticed how harsh it is. I am content with giving it all today, on a day for the real climbers.I've never done more than 5000 altitude meters in a race, maybe in training, but that was all. At the end of the day, it was a good experience, which helped me find out how far I can push my body in a Grand Tour when things become really tough. I saw today that I can push it really far and I learned a lot about the way a race goes and how prepared you have to be from a mental point of view to take on such a stage. Now we'll just see how we will continue in the next days."

Ryder Hesjedal:
"Definitely not how I envisioned it, but it's how it goes. It has already been since Monday that I wasn't feeling very good, but every day I have been trying to get through it, and I had seemed to be getting through, so I kept pushing. But today the body was not responding and I felt pretty bad all over.
It's unfortunate. I definitely don't want to leave the Giro like this, but sometimes it's out of your control. You can't just make things happen if it's not possible. I'd say it's a cyclist's speciality is suffering and pushing beyond what is capable most times.
I think it will take a while for this to sink in, and I am sure I will reflect more later. I will try and not get too upset, but it is not easy. It's how it goes – I will have to deal with it.  Life goes on.""Today was basically a total nightmare. On a stage that is so beautiful and what I love most about the Giro, my body didn't cooperate with my mind. I wanted more than anything to do the best Giro I could for my team, family, friends and fans.
As soon as we started climbing I knew something was not right. My body just didn't work anywhere near to the last days. I was struggling to hold the wheel in my terrain. Rapidly my body began to feel worse with a bad stomach - I had the feeling of the need to use the toilet, with a headache and dizziness. This was also concerning for the downhills as my balance was being affected. I have been fighting a respiratory ailment since Monday and the efforts this week I guess took its toll.
I just want to thank everyone for their support and especially my team for giving me the opportunity to try in this Giro d'Italia."

Darwin Atapuma:
“To be honest I think I need a while to really absorb what happened today and reflect on the stage. To come so close, on a stage like today, is devastating. I felt really good throughout the stage, had good legs and good sensations, and it was going perfectly. I gave it absolute everything when I attacked on the final climb, I thought if I could just hold on to my gap in the descent, I could make it in those final kilometers. I’m exhausted both mentally and physically. It would have been one of the best wins of my career. I just kept hoping and hoping that I would stay clear. But on a stage like today, it’s rare that everything goes to plan. I hope I’ll have more opportunities in the next week of racing.”

Georg Preidler:
“I dont know if I should be happy or disappointed since I was so close to winning the Queen Stage of the Giro. At least I am happy that I was the strongest of the breakaway group, but I’m also disappointed about the result because more was possible at the end.”

Vincenzo Nibali:
"If I'm happy with the day? Half and half. I’m happy to have dropped Valverde. They [Chaves and Kruijswijk] did a really strong attack today. I suffered with the change of rhythm really. I had to let them go and measure the effort. Maybe they had a bit of help at the front, I was close for a while but I couldn’t get back. It was quite windy and they were doing turns so it was easier for them to get time than for me to get back on. He [Michele Scarponi] and all the team did a great job today. We’ve dropped Valverde, we’re happy about that and now we need to recover."
